Protect Your Deck Surface from Damage
Avoid spraying insect repellent, sunscreen, or other chemical-based products directly onto the deck surface, as they may cause staining or discolouration. Always use non-abrasive composite or PVC deck cleaners, and test cleaning products in a small, inconspicuous area before full application. Place grills, fire tables, and other heat sources on non-rubber, non-vinyl protective mats, and keep them a safe distance from decking and railings.
Most spills on PVC and composite decking can be cleaned quickly using simple household cleaning methods. For everyday dirt, pollen, or food spills, rinse the area with water and use a soft-bristle brush with mild soap to gently clean the surface. Regular maintenance helps prevent debris and residue from settling into the texture of the deck boards.
For tougher stains such as grease, oil, or barbecue residue, use an approved composite or PVC deck cleaner following the manufacturer’s instructions. Common household cleaners such as Dawn® dish soap may also help remove grease spots when diluted with warm water. Always test any cleaning product in a small, inconspicuous area before full application.

Pressure Washing Composite & PVC Decking
Pressure washing PVC or composite decking should be done carefully to avoid damaging the deck surface. A power washer may be used for seasonal deck cleaning, but only with the proper settings and technique. Use a fan-tip nozzle only and keep the pressure below 1,100 PSI. Maintain a minimum distance of 10 inches from the deck surface and spray in the direction of the deck boards rather than against the grain. Avoid concentrating pressure in one area for extended periods, as improper use can damage the surface texture of the decking. Gentle cleaning methods are always recommended first before using high-pressure equipment. When pressure washing make sure you use less than 1,100 PSI, 10 inches above the surface, with a fan-tip nozzle, following the grain pattern.

Modern Low-E glass windows can reflect and concentrate sunlight onto nearby outdoor surfaces, including composite and PVC decking. In certain conditions, reflected heat may become significantly hotter than normal direct sunlight, especially during peak summer temperatures or in hot, sunny climates.
Darker decking colours absorb more heat and may be more susceptible to excessive surface temperatures when exposed to concentrated window reflections. For this reason, extra care should be taken when selecting dark-coloured decking near large Low-E glass windows, patio doors, or reflective architectural glass.
